College Cost Estimator

Estimate total college cost over multiple years with annual tuition increases and a year-by-year cost breakdown.

What is College Cost Estimator?

The college cost estimator projects total education expenses over your degree program, accounting for annual cost increases. It breaks down year-by-year costs for tuition, room and board, and books/supplies — giving a realistic picture of total out-of-pocket expenses before financial aid.

How to use

  1. 1 Enter the current annual tuition cost.
  2. 2 Enter annual room and board costs (if living on campus; enter 0 otherwise).
  3. 3 Enter annual books and supplies estimate.
  4. 4 Enter the number of years in the program.
  5. 5 Enter the expected annual cost increase rate.
  6. 6 Total cost and year-by-year breakdown appear instantly.

Formula

Cost in year Y = (tuition + room_board + books) × (1 + increase_rate)^(Y−1). Total = sum of all yearly costs.

Example calculation

Current costs: $35,000 tuition + $12,000 room/board + $1,200 books = $48,200/year. At 4% annual increase over 4 years: Year 1: $48,200, Year 2: $50,128, Year 3: $52,133, Year 4: $54,218. Total: $204,679.

Frequently asked questions

How fast do college costs increase?

Historically, college tuition has increased at about 3–5% per year, outpacing general inflation. Private universities have seen some of the largest increases.

Does this include financial aid?

No. This shows gross costs before scholarships, grants, or work-study. Subtract your expected aid package to estimate net cost and potential borrowing needs.

What is the average cost of a 4-year degree?

In 2024–2025, average total costs (tuition, fees, room/board) range from about $27,000/year at public in-state universities to over $58,000/year at private universities.

Should I factor in lost income?

If you're deciding between going to college and working full-time, the opportunity cost (forgone income) is a real consideration, though a degree typically increases lifetime earnings substantially.

What expenses are not included here?

This calculator covers tuition, housing, and books. Additional costs include transportation, personal expenses, technology, health insurance, and activity fees, which can add $3,000–$6,000/year.
