What is Dog Age Calculator?

A dog age calculator translates a dog's physical age into equivalent human years. Because dogs mature at different rates depending on their breed size (small, medium, large, or giant), this calculator uses size-specific weight classes to give the most accurate conversion possible.

How to use it

  1. 1️⃣ Enter your dog's age in actual years (fractions like 1.5 are allowed).
  2. 2️⃣ Select your dog's size/weight category (Small, Medium, Large, or Giant).
  3. 3️⃣ Read the equivalent human age and a short explanation of your dog's life stage.

Formula

For the first 2 years: all dogs age about 12 human years per year. After age 2: Small dogs age +4 per year; Medium +5 per year; Large +6 per year; Giant +7 per year.

💡 See it in action — a real example

A 5-year-old medium dog is equivalent to a 36-year-old human: 24 human years for the first 2 years, plus 3 years times 5 = 15 years, totaling 39 years.

❓ Common questions

Is the 1 dog year = 7 human years rule accurate?
No, that rule is an oversimplification. Dogs age very rapidly in their first two years of life, reaching adolescence/young adulthood quickly, and then their aging rate slows down significantly.
Why does size matter for a dog's age?
Larger dog breeds have shorter average lifespans and age faster biologically than smaller dog breeds. Giant breeds are considered senior citizens by age 5 or 6, whereas small breeds might not be senior until age 10.
