Fuel Cost Calculator

Calculate fuel cost for any trip. Enter distance, fuel efficiency, and price per litre or gallon to estimate total cost.

What is Fuel Cost Calculator?

A fuel cost calculator estimates the total cost of fuel for a road trip based on distance, fuel efficiency, and the price per litre or gallon. It also breaks down the cost per 100 km and the cost per person when splitting expenses among passengers. The calculator supports metric (km, L/100km) and imperial (miles, mpg) units.

How to use

  1. 1 Enter your trip distance and select kilometres or miles.
  2. 2 Enter the current fuel price and select per litre or per gallon.
  3. 3 Enter your vehicle fuel efficiency and select the appropriate unit (L/100km, km/L, or mpg).
  4. 4 Optionally enter the number of passengers to see the cost split per person.
  5. 5 Read the total fuel cost, fuel volume used, cost per 100 km, and cost per person.

Formula

Fuel used (L) = Distance (km) x Efficiency (L/100km) / 100 | Total cost = Fuel used x Price per litre

Example calculation

A 500 km trip in a car that uses 8 L/100km with fuel at $1.80 per litre: fuel used = 500 x 8 / 100 = 40 litres. Total cost = 40 x $1.80 = $72.00. With 4 passengers, each person pays $18.00.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my car fuel efficiency?

Check your vehicle manual or the manufacturer website for the official fuel consumption rating. For a real-world figure, fill your tank, drive a known distance, refill to the same level, and divide the litres used by the distance driven, then multiply by 100 for L/100km.

What is a good fuel efficiency for a car?

Most modern passenger cars achieve 6 to 9 L/100km (26 to 39 mpg) in combined driving. Hybrids can reach 4 to 5 L/100km, while larger SUVs and trucks may use 10 to 15 L/100km.

Can I calculate costs in currencies other than dollars?

The calculator uses a dollar sign as a generic currency symbol. Since it performs purely numerical calculations, you can interpret the result in any currency as long as you enter the fuel price in that same currency.

How do I convert mpg to L/100km?

Divide 235.215 by the mpg value. For example, 30 mpg equals 235.215 / 30 = 7.84 L/100km. The calculator handles this conversion automatically when you select the mpg efficiency unit.

Does the calculator account for motorway vs city driving differences?

No. It uses a single efficiency figure for the whole trip. For a more accurate estimate on mixed routes, use an average of your city and highway consumption figures, or use the real-world combined figure from your car.
