What is GPA Calculator?
A GPA calculator computes your Grade Point Average by weighting each course grade against its credit hours. The standard 4.0 scale assigns numerical values to letter grades, and your GPA is the credit-weighted average of all those values. This tool handles semester GPA instantly and can be used to track academic performance across multiple courses.
How to use
- 1 Each row represents one course — enter an optional course name, the number of credit hours, and your letter grade.
- 2 Click Add course to include additional subjects for the semester.
- 3 Adjust credit hours for courses that carry different weights (e.g., labs at 1 credit vs. lectures at 3 credits).
- 4 Remove any row using the X button if you entered it by mistake.
- 5 Your GPA updates in real time as you enter or change any value.
Formula
Example calculation
Three courses: Biology (3 credits, A = 4.0), History (3 credits, B+ = 3.3), and Math (4 credits, A- = 3.7). Total quality points = 12.0 + 9.9 + 14.8 = 36.7. Total credits = 10. GPA = 36.7 / 10 = 3.67.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between semester GPA and cumulative GPA?
Semester GPA covers only the courses taken in one term. Cumulative GPA averages all courses taken across all semesters. To calculate cumulative GPA, add your new semester quality points to your running total and divide by total credits earned.
Does A+ give more than 4.0?
In this calculator and most US institutions, A+ maps to 4.0 — the same as A. Some institutions do award 4.3 for A+, but that is not universal. Check your institution's grading policy for the exact scale they use.
How do pass/fail courses affect GPA?
Pass/fail courses typically do not carry a grade point value and are excluded from GPA calculations. Only include graded courses in this calculator.
What GPA is needed to graduate with honours?
Requirements vary by institution, but cum laude typically requires a 3.5 GPA, magna cum laude around 3.7, and summa cum laude 3.9 or above. Check your specific institution for exact thresholds.
Can I use this to calculate what grade I need in a final exam?
Not directly — this calculator shows your current GPA based on completed grades. For final exam calculations, you would need a separate tool that accounts for the weighting of each assessment within a single course.
