Each formula was developed for different clinical contexts, so comparing them provides a more balanced estimate.

BMI range: Weight (kg) = BMI x Height (m)^2, using BMI 18.5 to 24.9 | Devine (male): 50 + 2.3 x (height in inches - 60)

Example calculation

For a 175 cm male, the healthy BMI range gives approximately 56.6 to 76.2 kg. The Devine formula estimates 72.7 kg, Robinson gives 74.2 kg, Miller gives 74.0 kg, and Hamwi gives 75.7 kg. The average of these four formulas is about 74.2 kg.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula should I trust most?

No single formula is universally best. The BMI range reflects population-level guidelines, while the Devine formula is widely used in clinical settings for drug dosing. Using the average of all formulas gives a balanced estimate.

Why do the formulas give different results?

Each formula was developed from a different study population and designed for a different clinical purpose. Small differences in the underlying sample populations lead to slightly different outputs for the same inputs.

Does healthy weight account for muscle mass?

No. All of these formulas are based solely on height and do not account for body composition. A heavily muscled person may fall above the healthy weight range while still having low body fat.

Is being at the low end of the range better?

Not necessarily. Being underweight carries its own health risks, including bone density loss and nutritional deficiencies. The middle of the healthy weight range is generally a safer target than the lower bound.

How is this different from the BMI calculator?

The BMI calculator takes your current weight and height and tells you your BMI category. This calculator works in reverse — it takes your height and tells you what weight range corresponds to a healthy BMI.
