What is Height Predictor Calculator?
The Height Predictor uses the mid-parental height method, a clinically accepted technique that estimates a child's adult height based on the biological parents' heights. It accounts for genetic contribution from both parents and provides a predicted height along with a normal range of ±8.5 cm (±3.3 inches).
How to use
- 1 Enter the father's height using either centimeters or feet and inches.
- 2 Enter the mother's height in the same unit system.
- 3 Select the child's sex (male or female).
- 4 Optionally enter the child's current age and height to see their current growth percentile.
- 5 Click Calculate to see the predicted adult height and the expected range.
Formula
Example calculation
Father is 180 cm, mother is 165 cm, child is a boy. Predicted height = (180 + 165 + 13) / 2 = 179 cm. The expected range is 170.5 cm to 187.5 cm.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is the mid-parental height method?
It predicts adult height within ±8.5 cm (±3.3 in) for about 95% of children. Nutrition, health, and other environmental factors can influence actual height.
At what age does height prediction become more accurate?
Predictions become more accurate as children approach puberty. Bone age X-rays can further refine the estimate.
Does genetics fully determine height?
Genetics accounts for roughly 60–80% of height variation. Nutrition, sleep, exercise, and overall health make up the rest.
What is the 13 cm adjustment for?
The 13 cm (5.1 in) adjustment accounts for the average height difference between adult men and women, centering each sex's predicted height on the correct distribution.
Can I use this for adopted children?
The formula requires biological parents' heights. For adopted children without that information, growth charts and pediatrician assessments are more appropriate tools.
