Daily Water Intake Calculator

Calculate how much water you should drink each day based on your weight, activity level, and climate.

What is Daily Water Intake Calculator?

A daily water intake calculator estimates how much fluid you need each day based on your body weight, physical activity level, and the climate you live in. Staying properly hydrated supports digestion, temperature regulation, joint lubrication, and cognitive performance.

How to use

  1. 1 Enter your body weight and choose kg or lbs.
  2. 2 Select your activity level from the dropdown.
  3. 3 Select your climate.
  4. 4 Your recommended daily water intake in liters, milliliters, and cups appears instantly.

Formula

Base intake = weight_kg × 35 ml. Activity adjustment: sedentary +0%, light +10%, moderate +20%, active +30%, very active +40%. Climate adjustment: temperate +0%, warm +10%, hot/humid +20%.

Example calculation

A 70 kg moderately active person in a warm climate: base = 70 × 35 = 2450 ml. Activity +20% = 2940 ml. Climate +10% = 3234 ml ≈ 3.2 L per day.

Frequently asked questions

Does the '8 glasses a day' rule apply to everyone?

The 8×8 rule (eight 8-oz glasses) is a simplification. Actual needs vary based on body size, activity, diet, and environment. This calculator provides a more personalized estimate.

Does coffee count toward hydration?

Yes, caffeinated beverages still contribute to hydration despite mild diuretic effects. However, water and herbal teas are the most hydrating options.

Can you drink too much water?

Yes — hyponatremia (water intoxication) is rare but dangerous, and can occur in endurance athletes who over-hydrate. For most people, thirst is a reliable guide.

How much water do I need when exercising?

The American Council on Exercise recommends 17–20 oz before exercise, 7–10 oz every 10–20 minutes during, and 16–24 oz for every pound lost through sweat afterward.

Does food count toward my fluid intake?

Yes. Many fruits and vegetables are 80–95% water. A well-balanced diet may provide 20–30% of your daily fluid needs through food alone.
