Pace Calculator

Calculate running pace, speed, or finish time. Convert between min/km, min/mile, and km/h for any distance.

What is Pace Calculator?

A pace calculator lets runners and cyclists determine pace, speed, or finish time given any two of the three variables — distance, time, and pace. Pace is typically expressed as minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile, while speed is expressed in km/h or mph. Use it to set race targets, plan training runs, or convert between unit systems.

How to use

  1. 1 Select what you want to calculate: pace, speed, or finish time.
  2. 2 Enter your distance and choose the unit (km, miles, or metres).
  3. 3 For pace mode, enter your total time in hh:mm:ss format.
  4. 4 For time mode, enter your target pace per km or per mile.
  5. 5 Read the result, which also shows the equivalent values in other units.

Formula

Pace (min/km) = Time (seconds) / Distance (km) / 60 | Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) / Time (hours)

Example calculation

Running 10 km in 50 minutes gives a pace of 5:00 per km (300 seconds / 10 km = 30 sec/km, converted to 5:00 min/km) and a speed of 12.00 km/h. The equivalent pace in miles is 8:03 per mile.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good running pace?

Average recreational runners complete a kilometre in 5 to 7 minutes. A pace of 5:00 per km (8:03 per mile) is solid for most road races, while elite marathon runners hold under 3:00 per km.

How do I convert min/km to km/h?

Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per km. A pace of 5:00 min/km equals 60 / 5 = 12 km/h. A pace of 6:00 min/km equals 10 km/h.

What is a negative split strategy?

Running the second half of a race faster than the first is called a negative split. It is generally considered the most efficient pacing strategy and is used by most elite marathon runners.

How do I find my finish time for a half marathon?

Select the Find Time tab, enter 21.1 km as the distance, and input your target pace. The calculator will show your projected finish time along with your average speed.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace measures how long it takes to cover one unit of distance (e.g., 5 min/km), while speed measures how much distance is covered per unit of time (e.g., 12 km/h). They are inverses of each other.
