Running Pace Calculator

Calculate your running pace, speed, and finish times for common race distances from distance and time.

What is Running Pace Calculator?

A running pace calculator converts between distance, time, pace, and speed for runners of all levels. Enter any two values to instantly get pace per kilometer and mile, speed in km/h and mph, and projected finish times for popular race distances including 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon.

How to use

  1. 1 Choose a mode: Distance + Time, Pace + Distance, or Pace + Time.
  2. 2 Enter the required values for your chosen mode.
  3. 3 Pace, speed, and estimated race finish times appear instantly.

Formula

Pace (min/km) = total minutes / distance in km. Speed (km/h) = distance km / time hours. Finish time = pace × race distance.

Example calculation

Running 10 km in 55 minutes gives a pace of 5:30 min/km (8:51 min/mile) and a speed of 10.9 km/h. At this pace, a marathon would take about 3:51:00.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good running pace?

Average recreational runners complete a 5K at 6–8 min/km (9:40–12:50 min/mile). Competitive club runners aim for under 5 min/km. Elite marathon pace is under 3 min/km.

What is the difference between pace and speed?

Pace is time per distance (min/km or min/mile). Speed is distance per time (km/h or mph). They are inverses of each other.

How do I convert pace to speed?

Speed (km/h) = 60 / pace (min/km). For example, a pace of 5:00 min/km = 60/5 = 12 km/h.

How accurate are predicted race times?

Predicted finish times assume you can maintain the same pace throughout the race, which is challenging at longer distances. Fatigue, terrain, and conditions all affect actual results.

What pace do I need for a sub-2-hour half marathon?

A 1:59:59 half marathon requires a pace of 5:41 min/km (9:09 min/mile). This is a common goal for intermediate runners.
