What is Cooking Converter?

A cooking converter helps you scale recipes and switch between volume units (teaspoons, cups, mL, etc.) and weight units (grams, ounces, pounds) used in cooking and baking. US recipes use cups and tablespoons; European recipes typically use metric grams and millilitres. Note that volume-to-weight conversions depend on ingredient density — this tool covers volume and weight separately.

How to use

  1. 1 Use the Volume section to convert between liquid/volume cooking measurements.
  2. 2 Use the Weight section to convert between mass/weight cooking measurements.
  3. 3 Enter a value in the input field of either section.
  4. 4 Select the From and To units, and the result plus full conversion table appear instantly.
  5. 5 Use the swap button to reverse any conversion.

Formula

For volume: converted = input × (factor_of_from / factor_of_to), base unit mL. For weight: converted = input × (factor_of_from / factor_of_to), base unit grams.

Example calculation

1 cup = 236.588 mL = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 8 fl oz. 1 stick of butter = 113.4 g = 4 oz = 0.25 lb.

Frequently asked questions

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?

3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon (US). This is consistent across US measurements. In the metric system, 1 tablespoon is defined as 15 mL and 1 teaspoon as 5 mL, also a 3:1 ratio.

How many mL is a US cup?

1 US customary cup = 236.588 mL. In the metric system, a cup is sometimes rounded to 250 mL (used in Australia and Canada). Always check which standard a recipe uses.

How do I convert cups to grams?

Cups measure volume; grams measure weight. The conversion depends on the ingredient's density. 1 cup of water ≈ 236.6 g, but 1 cup of flour ≈ 120–130 g (depending on how it's packed), and 1 cup of sugar ≈ 200 g. Use a per-ingredient density reference for precise baking.

What is the difference between a fluid ounce and a weight ounce?

A fluid ounce (fl oz) measures volume: 1 US fl oz = 29.574 mL. A weight ounce (oz) measures mass: 1 oz = 28.35 g. They are coincidentally close for water (1 fl oz of water ≈ 29.57 g) but differ for other ingredients.

How many grams is a pound in cooking?

1 pound (lb) = 453.592 grams. Large quantities of meat, produce, and baking recipes often list weight in pounds in the US and in grams or kilograms in Europe.
