Cost Per Use Calculator

Find out the true cost per use of any purchase — and see how it compares to everyday items.

What is Cost Per Use Calculator?

A cost per use calculator breaks down the real value of a purchase by dividing the total cost by how many times you'll use it. A $200 jacket worn 100 times costs $2 per use — less than a $5 coffee. This reframe helps justify quality purchases and avoid wasteful ones.

How to use

  1. 1 Enter the total item cost.
  2. 2 Enter how many times per week you expect to use it.
  3. 3 Choose whether to specify a lifespan in years or a total number of uses.
  4. 4 Read the cost per use, cost per month, and cost per year.
  5. 5 The comparison line shows the equivalent in $5 coffees for fun context.

Formula

Total uses = Uses per week × 52 × years Cost per use = Item cost ÷ Total uses Cost per month = Cost per use × (Uses per week × 52 ÷ 12)

Example calculation

A $150 pair of running shoes used 4 times per week for 2 years: Total uses = 4 × 52 × 2 = 416. Cost per use = $150 ÷ 416 = $0.36. Cost per month = $0.36 × (4 × 52/12) = $6.24.

Frequently asked questions

Why does cost per use matter?

It shifts the mental frame from 'this is expensive' to 'is this good value over time.' A $500 item used daily for 5 years costs $0.27/use — often less than cheap alternatives replaced frequently.

What counts as a 'use'?

Whatever makes sense for the item: wearing a garment, brewing with a coffee maker, using a piece of software for a session, etc.

Can I use total uses instead of years?

Yes. Toggle to 'Total uses' mode and enter the expected total number of uses directly.
