Formula

Cubic yards = (Length × Width × Depth in inches) / 324. Weight in tons = cubic yards × 1.4 (average gravel density). Bags = cubic feet / 1 (approx. 1 cu ft per 50 lb bag).

Example calculation

A 20 ft × 10 ft driveway at 4 inches deep: (20 × 10 × 4) / 324 = 2.47 cubic yards. Weight: 2.47 × 1.4 = 3.45 tons.

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

4–6 inches is standard for driveways. Use 4 inches for light vehicle traffic and 6 inches for heavier loads.

2–3 inches is sufficient for foot traffic paths. This provides good coverage and drainage without excessive material.
