Tile Calculator

Calculate how many tiles you need for any room. Enter room and tile dimensions to get tiles needed, area covered, and boxes required.

What is Tile Calculator?

A tile calculator helps you estimate how many tiles you need to cover a floor or wall. It accounts for tile dimensions, room size, and a waste percentage to ensure you buy enough tiles without running short mid-project.

How to use

  1. 1 Enter the room length and width in your chosen unit (inches or cm).
  2. 2 Enter the tile length and width in the same unit.
  3. 3 Set a waste percentage — 10% is standard for most installations.
  4. 4 Click Calculate to see tiles needed, area covered, and boxes required.
  5. 5 Always buy at least 10% extra to account for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.

Formula

Number of tiles = (Room Area / Tile Area) × (1 + Waste% / 100). Boxes needed = ceil(tiles / 10), assuming 10 tiles per box.

Example calculation

A 120 × 96 inch room (11,520 sq in) with 12 × 12 inch tiles (144 sq in) needs 11,520 / 144 = 80 tiles. With 10% waste: 88 tiles, or 9 boxes.

Frequently asked questions

What waste percentage should I use?

Use 10% for straight-lay patterns, 15% for diagonal patterns, and up to 20% for complex cuts or irregularly shaped rooms.

How many tiles come in a box?

This varies by tile size and manufacturer. The calculator assumes 10 tiles per box, but check your specific product's box count.

Should I measure in inches or cm?

Use whichever unit your tape measure uses, but be consistent — room and tile dimensions must be in the same unit.

Do I need extra tiles for grout lines?

Grout lines are typically 1/8 to 3/8 inch and have a negligible effect on tile count for most rooms. The waste percentage covers this.

Can I use this for wall tiles?

Yes. Just enter the wall height as the 'length' and wall width as the 'width' to calculate wall tile coverage.
